Literacy

At Deddington Primary School our English curriculum is based entirely on the National Curriculum. We believe literacy lies at the heart of learning. Teachers have chosen quality texts to support the delivery of the English curriculum and these may be linked to the topic, a particular author or a specific genre which the class is focusing on.

'Read Write Inc' is our chosen scheme for the teaching of phonics, and is used from F1 onwards. The phonics programme enables our children to confidently develop their early reading skills, right from the beginning of their school life. Once children become fluent readers they will widen their choice of texts to increase their love of reading.

Cursive handwriting is taught from Year one upwards.

The teaching of SPaG is embedded within our literacy lessons across the curriculum.  We seek to enhance our English cultural capital, not only through the texts chosen for cultural richness but also through organized trips, visitors such as ARCh Readers reading with individual pupils, theatre companies and authors visiting our school, and much more.
