English

At Deddington Primary School our English curriculum is based entirely on the National Curriculum. We believe literacy lies at the heart of learning. Teachers have chosen high quality texts to support the delivery of the English curriculum and these may be linked to the topic, a particular author or a specific genre which the class is focusing on.

'Read Write Inc' is our chosen scheme for the teaching of phonics, and is used from F1 onwards. The phonics programme enables our children to confidently develop their early reading skills, right from the beginning of their school life. Once children become fluent readers, they will widen their choice of texts to increase their love of reading.

Read, Write, Inc resources are also used to teach spelling and handwriting.

The teaching of grammar is embedded within our literacy lessons across the curriculum. We seek to enhance our English cultural capital, not only through the texts chosen for cultural richness but also through organised trips, visitors such as ARCh Readers reading with individual pupils, theatre companies and authors visiting our school, and much more.

Oracy is the ability to articulate ideas, develop understanding and engage with others through spoken language.

At Deddington Church of England Primary School, our framework and progression map for oracy supported by Voice 21 resources, demonstrates the value and importance of oracy.  We inspire our children to engage in high-quality talk, and, in doing so, make society a fairer, more equitable place where all voices are valued and heard.

We believe that oracy is a powerful tool for learning, by teaching pupils to become more effective speakers and listeners. We empower them to better understand themselves, each other and the world around them.
